There's nothing worse than sitting in Lagos traffic, sun blazing through the windscreen, and your AC is blowing air that might as well be coming from outside.
If your car's air conditioning has gone from ice-cold to lukewarm (or completely warm), it's not something to “manage” until later. Here’s what’s actually going on.
1. Low Refrigerant (Gas)
This is the number one reason AC stops cooling in Nigeria. Refrigerant doesn't get “used up” like fuel — if your gas is low, it means there’s a leak somewhere in the system. Topping up without finding the leak just means you’ll be back here in a few weeks.
2. A Failing AC Compressor
The compressor is the heart of your AC system. If it’s weak, worn out, or the clutch isn’t engaging properly, your AC will blow air but it won’t be cold. A failing compressor often comes with a knocking or grinding noise from under the bonnet when the AC is switched on.
3. Blocked or Dirty Condenser
Your condenser sits at the front of the car, right behind the bumper. On Nigerian roads, it collects dust, sand, and debris fast — especially if you drive on untarred roads often. A blocked condenser can’t release heat properly, so your AC struggles even if everything else is fine.
4. Electrical Faults (Fuses, Relays, Sensors)
Sometimes the AC “isn't cooling” because a component isn’t even switching on — a blown fuse, a faulty relay, or a bad pressure sensor can cut power to the compressor entirely. This is common in older Tokunbo vehicles with aging wiring.
5. Cabin Air Filter Blockage
If your AC is cold at the vents but weak on airflow, a clogged cabin filter is often the culprit — especially if you’re driving through dusty routes regularly. It’s one of the cheapest and easiest fixes on this list.
Why You Shouldn’t Ignore It
An AC that’s struggling now often means a small leak or wear that gets worse — and more expensive — with time. A refrigerant leak left unattended can damage your compressor, turning a N15,000 top-up into a N150,000+ compressor replacement.
How FAC Diagnoses It
At Favouritech Auto Concepts, we use pressure gauges and leak detection to pinpoint exactly where your AC system is losing performance — not guesswork. Whether it’s a simple recharge, a condenser clean, or compressor work, we tell you exactly what’s wrong before we touch your car.
Feeling the heat in traffic? Bring your car in and let’s get your AC back to ice-cold.
