P0420 (“Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold") is one of the most misunderstood codes out there. A lot of drivers hear “catalytic converter” and immediately brace for a huge bill — but that’s not always the actual problem. Here’s what’s really going on when this code pops up.
What the Catalytic Converter Does
Your catalytic converter cleans up exhaust gases before they leave the car, converting harmful emissions into less harmful ones. Your engine computer monitors this process using two oxygen sensors — one before the converter, one after. P0420 means the computer isn’t seeing the difference it expects between the two readings.
1. A Genuinely Worn-Out Catalytic Converter
Yes, sometimes the converter itself has degraded — especially in older Tokunbo vehicles or ones that have run rich or lean for a long time without repair. This is the most expensive cause, but it’s not the only one.
2. Failing Oxygen Sensors
More often than people expect, the problem isn’t the converter at all — it’s a faulty upstream or downstream O2 sensor giving the computer bad readings. Replacing a sensor is far cheaper than replacing a converter, so this should always be checked first.
3. Exhaust Leaks Near the Converter
A leak before or around the catalytic converter can throw off the readings the sensors send back, triggering the code even when the converter is fine.
4. Engine Misfires or Unresolved P0171/P0172 Codes
If your engine has been running lean or rich for a while (see our post on P0171/P0172), it can damage the catalytic converter over time, or simply confuse the readings enough to trigger P0420 without permanent damage yet.
5. Fuel Quality
Nigerian fuel quality varies significantly by station, and lower-grade fuel over time can accelerate wear on your catalytic converter and sensors.
Why “Just Clear It and Drive” Is a Bad Idea
A car can drive fine with P0420 showing, which is why many people ignore it. But an inefficient catalytic converter usually means your engine is compensating somewhere else, which affects fuel consumption — and if the real cause is left unresolved, you risk actual converter damage down the line.
How FAC Diagnoses It
We check O2 sensor readings on both sides of the converter, inspect for exhaust leaks, and review your fuel trim history before ever recommending a converter replacement. Most of the time, the fix is far cheaper than people expect.
